Routine Oral Healthcare
Kalamazoo Pediatric Dentistry recommends that every child follow our tips for brushing and flossing to ensure the best possible health for their teeth.
Brushing
Proper brushing is the foundation of great dental health, but only when it’s done properly. We at Kalamazoo Pediatric Dentistry would love to demonstrate proper brushing techniques. Here are a few brushing tips:
- Always use a toothbrush with soft bristles.
- For children under 2, a smear of toothpaste is enough. At the age of 2 a pea-sized amount is suggested.
- Move your toothbrush in small circular motions. This will release food particles trapped under the gum line.
- Hold your toothbrush with the bristles at a slight angle toward the gums.
- Take your time, focusing on every surface of each tooth.
- It should take two minutes to brush your teeth.
- Don’t forget to brush your tongue.
- Replace your toothbrush as soon as it begins to look frayed.
We recommend that all our patients brush their teeth twice a day. It may be beneficial to brush after each meal, depending on your child’s risk.
Flossing
We know not too many of our patients love to floss. But this is an important step to ensuring the health and longevity of your teeth. Flossing removes food and plaque between teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach.
To properly floss, pull the floss from its container and tear off a piece several inches long. Wrap each end tightly around your middle fingers. Gently guide the floss between your teeth, moving first towards the gum line and then back. As you make your way through your mouth, unwrap clean floss from your fingers so you aren’t transporting tooth particles from one spot to another. Make sure to floss all your teeth, including your molars.
We recommend flossing at least once a day, preferably at night. Floss as needed throughout the day if you notice trapped food after meals. If you’re not a regular flosser, you might notice your gums bleeding the first few times. This is normal and a sign that you’re reaching areas that have been ignored. If the bleeding gets worse or becomes painful though, give us a call.
